Purdue University – Postdoctoral Fellow

Purdue University

Postdoctoral Fellow in Systems or Mechanical Engineering

Purdue University has established a research institute focused on Resilient Extraterrestrial Habitat Engineering https://www.purdue.edu/rethi/. The program, funded by NASA, is aggressively working to establish the knowhow to design long-term space habitats that are resilient, including the architecture and autonomous operation of smart and resilient permanent human settlements outside Earth. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary group of faculty, researchers, and students, working at the interface of mechanical engineering, systems engineering and aerospace engineering.

We seek dynamic individuals with expertise in mechanical, systems, or aerospace engineering, having excellent leadership, communication and management skills. The candidate will collaborate with our team in establishing research plans, leading the integration of models as multi-physics systems of systems, managing disruptions/hazards, performing trade-off establishing autonomous decision-making capabilitiesall directed toward creating permanent habitats that will serve the needs of future deep space explorers. There will be opportunities to supervise graduate and undergraduate research assistants, publish technical articles, participate in technical conferences, use innovative test methods, and gain leadership and communication skills. Experience with physics-based modeling, surrogate models, and computational research is essential, and skills to support experimental research is desirable.

Qualified individuals should have a Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, at the time of appointment. Review of candidates will begin by March 5 2023, and the position will remain open until filled. The appointment is for 1.5 years. Salary will be competitive.
