Letters

The Graduate Academic Advisor will provide students with various letters, please find them listed below with specific requirements for each. Please send the required information to Saana McDaniel, saana@mit.edu, in an email when you are ready to request a letter.

  • Funding source for the following academic year, or for the time remaining in the program.
  • If the letter is to request an extension, please provide the specific reason(s) why you were unable to complete your degree by the current expected program end date and why additional time is needed to complete the degree program (examples: change/addition of new major field of study; change in research topic; change in thesis advisor; unexpected research delays; unexpected delays in completing the writing of/defense of thesis; etc.).
  • Funding source for the following academic year, or for the time remaining in the program.
  • If the letter is to request for an extension, you need to provide a one-sentence explanation.
  • If the source of your funding changes during your issued I-20 or DS-2019, you need to provide a letter to ISO which includes the new funding source and the dates associated with it.
  • Funding source for the following academic year, or for the time remaining in the program.
  • Briefly describe how the practical experience you are seeking is directly related to your field of study in Mechanical Engineering. 
  • The date on which you will complete all requirements for your PhD including submission of your thesis.
  • Copy your advisor on the email requesting the OPT letter.
  • Current expected date of completion of the degree program.
  • Confirm the subject you will be enrolled in during the summer term (advisor, 2.989).
  • Number of units you will earn (advisor).
  • Confirm if this internship is to meet the MechE professional perspectives/experience requirement to complete your degree (advisor).
  • The name of the faculty member who will evaluate the work (that name will appear on the new Form I-20).
  • Name and address of company/organization, including zip code where the CPT will be conducted.
  • Specific start date and end date of the internship/experience (CPT authorization).
  • Details of the internship.
  • Briefly describe your major field of study and how your internship is directly related to it.

  • If you complete your program early and need a letter to certify that you have completed all your program requirements but your degree wont be conferred by MIT until a later date, please request for early program completion letter.
  • No specific information needed from student.
