Engineering Internship for Master’s Students

Job Description

Orien Energy Inc. is an early-stage startup founded by MIT course 2 alum Yajing Zhao (PhD’22). Orien is decarbonizing the energy-intensive industrial drying by an innovative heat pump. Drying consumes up to 25% of US energy in industrial processes, while a lot of this energy is being wasted in the humid exhaust. Orien Energy is trying to capture this waste heat by integrating water absorbing materials into an innovative heat pump system in a highly-efficient, sustainable, and affordable manner.

As the Engineering Intern, your job entails thermodynamic/heat transfer modeling for the heat pump design, materials characterization, and prototyping in a lab. You will be working closely with the founder and the CEO of the company, Dr. Yajing Zhao, along with another mechanical engineer. This position will be funded through the MassCEC Clean Energy Internship program. Students who recently graduated from (within a year) or currently enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s program are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to senior/master’s students who have prototyping skills or thermofluids modeling experience, but anyone with strong interests in this internship position is encouraged to apply.

Feel free to reach out to Dr. Yajing Zhao directly (yjzhao@orien.energy) if you have any questions.

Internship Location: Greentown Labs, Somerville; or remote

Time commitment: at least 15 hours per week during the Spring semester
